Bacterial population genomics and metabolism

Wyres Lab at ASM2026

The Australian Society for Microbiology Annual Meeting was held in Melbourne, in June 2026. We were proud to share our work and contribute to the event through session chairing and poster judging, with six of our team in attendance.

Naoise McGarry gave a fantastic talk on her work developing and applying a novel Klebsiella oxytoca O antigen locus database. You can find the database alongside the recently developed K. oxytoca K locus database here.

Hina Salimuddin presented the KlebNET-GSP Metadata Repository. This open access repository is a community driven data curation effort, which aims to maximise use and reuse of publicly available Klebsiella pneumoniae genomes. At the time of writing, close to 20,000 K. pneumoniae Species Complex genomes are represented in the Repository!

Tom Stanton showed us how intuitive data visualisation can aid the interpretation of K. pneumoniae sero-epidemiology analyses via the KlebSeroEpi app.

Kalani Paranagama presented the culmination of her PhD project on K. pneumoniae metabolism, wherein she has been expanding our pan-metabolic reference model and has identified niche-associated metabolic traits.

Ella Petrowski presented her 2025 Honours project, showcasing how genome-scale metabolic models can be integrated with transposon mutagenesis experiments to discover novel K. pneumoniae metabolism.
